How do I compress an image to an exact size?

Switch to the “To a size” mode and type your target in KB. The tool tries a range of quality settings until the encoded file fits, and downscales the picture only if the target cannot be reached otherwise.

Why did my PNG not get smaller?

PNG is lossless, so a quality setting has no effect on it. When you set a target size we re-encode PNG images as JPG to actually reach it; in quality mode we keep your format and tell you honestly if nothing was saved.

Will compressing reduce the image dimensions?

Not in quality mode — the width and height stay exactly the same. In target-size mode the tool only downscales as a last resort, when no quality level alone can reach the size you asked for.

What does compressing an image do?

Compression rewrites a picture using fewer bytes. For JPG and WebP that means quantising fine detail the eye barely registers: the image looks nearly identical, but the file can be a fraction of the size.

The quality setting decides how aggressive that trade is. High quality removes very little and saves less; low quality saves a lot but can leave visible blocks and haloes, especially around text and sharp edges.

Why compress your images?

The usual trigger is a limit. Job portals, government forms and university applications routinely cap uploads at 100 KB, 500 KB or 2 MB, and email attachments bounce when they get too big. Compressing is the fastest way to get under the line without cropping anything out.

The other reason is speed. Images are the heaviest part of most web pages, so compressing them before upload is one of the simplest things you can do to make a site load faster on mobile data.
