What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the file format Apple iPhones and iPads use to save photos. The name is short for High Efficiency Image Container — Apple’s implementation of the HEIF standard — and it has been the default since iOS 11 in 2017. Each picture is compressed with HEVC (H.265), the same modern codec used for 4K video.
Because of that codec, a HEIC photo is typically around 50% smaller than the same image saved as JPEG, with little or no visible loss in quality. That efficiency is great for your phone’s storage, but it comes at the cost of compatibility.
A .heic file is also more than a single picture. The format uses the ISOBMFF container, so it can hold a Live Photo, a burst sequence, depth maps for portrait mode, and HDR gain maps — all inside one file. Converting to JPG flattens this into a standard, universally readable still image.
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
The problem with HEIC is that many devices and apps still don’t understand it. Windows only opens HEIC after you install Microsoft’s HEIF Image Extensions, most Android phones can’t preview it at all, and plenty of older photo editors and printing services reject the format outright.
Upload forms are the most common pain point. Job portals, government websites, banks and social platforms frequently accept only JPG or PNG, so a HEIC photo straight from an iPhone gets refused. JPG, by contrast, is the universal image format — it opens everywhere, from a 15-year-old laptop to any website’s file picker.

Windows
- If HEIC files won’t open, install “HEIF Image Extensions” from the Microsoft Store.
- Open the photo in the Photos app.
- Open the “…” menu, choose “Save as”, and pick JPG (JPEG) as the file type.
macOS
- Open the HEIC file in Preview.
- Choose File ▸ Export from the menu bar.
- Set the Format to JPEG, adjust quality if needed, and click Save.
iPhone (shoot JPG from now on)
- Open Settings ▸ Camera ▸ Formats.
- Select “Most Compatible” to capture new photos as JPEG instead of HEIC.
- Existing HEIC photos still need converting — this only changes future shots.
