What is a PNG file?

PNG is a lossless image format, which means it stores every pixel exactly as it was saved. That makes it perfect for logos, screenshots, diagrams and anything that needs a transparent background — the edges stay crisp no matter how many times you re-save the file.

The cost of that precision is size. Because PNG never throws information away, a photograph saved as a PNG can easily be five or ten times larger than the same picture saved as a JPG.

Why convert PNG to JPG?

Size is the usual reason. If a form rejects your upload, an email bounces for being too large, or a page loads slowly, converting a photo-like PNG to JPG is the quickest fix — often cutting the file to a fraction of its original size with no difference you can see.

Compatibility helps too. JPG is accepted absolutely everywhere: every printer, every photo kiosk, every upload form and every older device. Converting removes any chance of a file being refused.

PNG or JPG — which should you keep?

Keep PNG for anything with sharp edges or transparency: logos, icons, screenshots of text and design assets. JPG would blur those edges and fill the transparent areas with white.

Choose JPG for photographs and for anything you need to send, upload or print. Photos have no hard edges for JPG compression to spoil, so you get a far smaller file that still looks the same.
