What is a WebP file?

WebP is a modern image format created by Google to make pictures on the web smaller and faster to load. It compresses images more efficiently than JPG or PNG while keeping them sharp, which is why so many websites now save their images as WebP.

The trade-off is compatibility. Because WebP is newer, some older apps, photo editors, and devices still can't open it. If you've downloaded an image from a website and found it won't open the usual way, there's a good chance it's a WebP file.

Why convert WebP to JPG?

JPG is the most widely supported image format in the world. Practically every app, device, printer, and website accepts it without complaint. Converting a WebP to JPG turns a file that 'won't open' into one that simply works everywhere.

It's the right move when you need to edit an image in older software, share it with someone whose device doesn't recognize WebP, upload it to a platform that rejects WebP, or send it to print. JPG trades a little of WebP's efficiency for rock-solid, universal compatibility.

WebP vs JPG — which should you keep?

Keep WebP when your only goal is a fast website and you control where the image is used — it gives you smaller files at similar quality. Choose JPG when compatibility matters more than file size: editing, sharing, printing, or uploading anywhere that might not accept WebP.

For everyday use outside the web, JPG is the safer choice. It opens everywhere, looks great for photos, and you'll never have to explain to anyone why their device can't read your picture.
