What is a HEIC file?

HEIC is the format Apple iPhones and iPads use to store photos. It stands for High Efficiency Image Container — Apple’s take on the HEIF standard — and has been the camera default since iOS 11 in 2017. Each photo is compressed with HEVC (H.265), the codec also used for 4K video.

That compression makes a HEIC file roughly 50% smaller than the same shot saved as JPEG, with almost no visible quality loss. It is efficient for storage, but HEIC is poorly supported outside the Apple ecosystem, which is where converting helps.

A .heic file can also bundle more than one picture: Live Photos, burst sequences, depth maps and HDR gain maps all live inside its ISOBMFF container. Converting to PNG extracts a single, standard, universally readable still image.

Why convert HEIC to PNG?

Choose PNG when quality and editability matter more than file size. PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly, with no compression artifacts, so it is the right format for screenshots, diagrams, logos, line art, product images and anything you will crop or edit repeatedly.

Windows

If HEIC won’t open, install “HEIF Image Extensions” from the Microsoft Store.
Open the photo in the Photos app, or open it in Paint.
Choose “Save as” and pick PNG as the file type.

macOS

Open the HEIC file in Preview.
Choose File ▸ Export from the menu bar.
Set the Format to PNG and click Save.

iPhone (shoot JPEG from now on)

Open Settings ▸ Camera ▸ Formats.
Choose “Most Compatible” to capture new photos as JPEG instead of HEIC.
iOS can’t export PNG directly, so convert here for lossless PNGs. Existing HEIC photos still need converting.
