What is a WebP file?

WebP is a modern image format created by Google to make pictures on the web smaller and faster to load. It compresses more efficiently than PNG or JPG while staying sharp, which is why so many websites now serve their images as WebP.

The catch is compatibility. Because WebP is newer, some older apps, editors, and devices still can't open it. If you've saved an image from a website and it won't open the usual way, there's a good chance it's a WebP file.

Why convert WebP to PNG instead of JPG?

Choose PNG over JPG when your image has transparent areas — logos, icons, stickers, or cut-out graphics. PNG keeps those transparent pixels intact, while JPG would fill them with a solid background.

PNG is also lossless, so it preserves crisp edges and flat colors perfectly — ideal for graphics, screenshots, and anything with text. The trade-off is a larger file than JPG, which is a fair price when transparency and sharpness matter.

WebP to PNG vs WebP to JPG — which should you pick?

Pick PNG when your image has transparency or crisp graphics, logos, or text that must stay razor-sharp. PNG is lossless and keeps see-through areas, at the cost of a bigger file.

Pick JPG when it's a photo with no transparency and you want the smallest file. For everyday photos, JPG is lighter; for graphics and anything transparent, PNG is the safe choice.
